Hey, i have a 1986 mazda rx7 that will start if we put a bit of gas directly into the engine, we've tested the fuel pump (when the keys turned on you can hear it) and it seems to be working, what else could it be?

OK, let's start with the basics:

You need three things for your engine to work:

Fire (spark), fuel (gas), and compression (the pistons/valves, or rather the rotary equivalent, operating properly).

Anything out of whack with any of those, and the engine either won't run, or won't run right.

Now, you say it will start if you put some gas directly into the engine. I'm assuming the throttlebody.

This tells me that the spark and compression parts are fine and the problem lies in fuel delivery.

You don't say if the car stays running after initially starting.

But there are a few things you need to check:

Fuel pressure: This is the REAL test of the fuel pump. Just hearing the pump when you turn the key doesn't tell you if it's working properly. If your pump isn't putting out the right pressure, your fuel injectors will not work properly.

Fuel filter: Just replace it. You should do this periodically anyway, and they aren't that expensive. They run less than $30 at AutoZone for your car.

Fuel injector: If your pump is putting out the correct pressure and you're fuel filter isn't clogged, then the next thing to suspect is the fuel injector or the fuel injector pressure regulator.

You can do a rough check of the injector by watching as you crank the car over. If you've got proper fuel pressure, you should be able to smell gas with the throttlebody open to watch. Also, you should be able to see the spray, and it should be a well formed connical spray as well.

WARNING: Don't plant your face directly over the throttlebody if at all possible. If you have other problems and the car backfires, you might singe some hair off your face. Not likely, but still...

    I hope this helps.
