Help answer this question below.
No. That would turn them all into right-wingers, and there would be NO freedom whatsoever.
It would sure help.
Not at all. We need people with intellect and empathy, not people trained to follow authority blindly.
In a country the was founded on many of the ideals of the Roman republic, definitely.
I do and I also think they should experience other parts of life..if they are about to tell us how to live ours :D
Yes,I have always thought that.Although a qualified civilian could and has run the USA,I feel it's better to have a military background so that he has a greater sense of empathy for the soldiers, and could pick advisors and delegate authority wisely.Althoooooughhhh....Jimmy Carter is an example of a President with a military background that shouldn't be in charge of a chicken coop.It is ideal to have a strict Constitutionalist as a President.
no!
No I don't think it should be a requirement. International conflict is only a part of what they have to deal with. I want leaders who are open to new ideas, willing to weigh the options, are intelligent, and not too far right or left -- somewhere in the middle.
yes!
...sounds like somebody voted for McCain...
No, that is patently wrong. This is not a military state...umm well not yet.
Yes; I won't vote for a president who has no military experience. The presidential job description clearly states "Commander in Chief of the armed forces". That would be like hiring a kindergarten student to be a CEO of Finance; IMO.
No, then you get the result like "Space Troopers" where you have to serve 2-5 years to be considered a citizen.
However, the left side of the fence seems no better then the right when it comes to making policy together or by themselves.
No, merely role playing with GI Joe dolls is acceptable
yes, I think that should be a prerequisite for any public office, 20 year enlistment in DOD. the military teaches you service before self, integrity, excellance in all that we do; I see none of those core values in most of our elected officials; they are there to be served.
No, but they should be qualified in knowledge in that area and many others. Since people vote for the popular person, few are qualified for president, much less janitors. No slants to janitors, I've done it, but it is a compliment that if they had money like candidates, they would be qualified. +5
I think that it would help them to better understand that particular aspect of the job, but I don't think that it should be a requirement for service in an elected position. If this had been a requirement for elected office, then we would have missed out on a number of our better presidents. For example, Thomas Jefferson never served in the military.

You're reading Do you think elected officials, especially congressional members and the president, should serve in the military to qualify for election?

The military fights for your freedom.
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
Somewhat, they do.
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
That's all they do.Here's an old Roman axiom for you -"Let those who seek peace, prepare for war"
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
You have a point, but I still wouldn't want to be ruled by the extreme right.
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
I don't see the tie-in between military and right-wingers. I do see the attributes of loyalty, respect, honor, courage...30 of our presidents had military careers though two of the non-military presidents were great men in my book.

One of them wouldn' happen to be Reagan, would it?:)
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Howdy Doody was never my hero...:)
by Lucky on October 4th, 2009
Yes , yes and yes he was.
by Gone on October 4th, 2009
Lucky: The military is a hotbed of conservative values. I consider Thomas Jefferson one of my heroes. And if Woodrow Wilson hadn't been such a racist, he'd be right next to Jefferson.
.
Anonymous: Actually, I liked Reagan. But I'm more of a Libertarian. I don't like the way the right attackes our freedoms any more than the way the left does. But the way the right attacks our freedom of speech (especially under GW) especially irks me.
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
Why the !@#$ not?;)
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
Hey, its okay to disagree. I never cared for Reagan except for his TV movies. I support Mrs A, she has all the ammo for her cause:)
by Lucky on October 4th, 2009
Fine, I got no major problems with you ultra conservatives. Just keep your censorship off my 1st amendment rights!!!!
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
@Lucky-Reagan Rocked!!:)
@Hungry Guy-I would describe myself as more of a Libertarian, but as long as you want to assign labels, you can call me "Queen of All That is Good and Right" and I won't object ;)
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
Sorry Anonymous, but you were the first one who commented saying how the military fights for freedom (which isn't totally true), so I assumed that it was you who DRed me for saying I oppose censorship.
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
And everything you said up to just now, sure sounded like an ultra conservative--not even aware how conservatives attack our freedoms...
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
I also oppose censorship. You wrongly assumed the DR.I am reasonably sure that you DR'd me,but am not very sensitive about it.Here's a tissue for you ;)
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
Yes, I wrongly assumed that you DRed me because your comment and the DR came at the exact same time. And I didn't DR you either. I don't need a f---g tissue! Can we make peace now?
by HungryGuy on October 4th, 2009
Kinda like the DR I got ...hhmmmmm...Peace?Only if you accept this tissue...lol!
by Ms.A on October 4th, 2009
Okay, I'll accept the tissue :-)
