No. That would turn them all into right-wingers, and there would be NO freedom whatsoever.

Not at all. We need people with intellect and empathy, not people trained to follow authority blindly.

Yes,I have always thought that.Although a qualified civilian could and has run the USA,I feel it's better to have a military background so that he has a greater sense of empathy for the soldiers, and could pick advisors and delegate authority wisely.Althoooooughhhh....Jimmy Carter is an example of a President with a military background that shouldn't be in charge of a chicken coop.It is ideal to have a strict Constitutionalist as a President.

No I don't think it should be a requirement. International conflict is only a part of what they have to deal with. I want leaders who are open to new ideas, willing to weigh the options, are intelligent, and not too far right or left -- somewhere in the middle.

Yes; I won't vote for a president who has no military experience. The presidential job description clearly states "Commander in Chief of the armed forces". That would be like hiring a kindergarten student to be a CEO of Finance; IMO.

No, then you get the result like "Space Troopers" where you have to serve 2-5 years to be considered a citizen.

However, the left side of the fence seems no better then the right when it comes to making policy together or by themselves.

yes, I think that should be a prerequisite for any public office, 20 year enlistment in DOD. the military teaches you service before self, integrity, excellance in all that we do; I see none of those core values in most of our elected officials; they are there to be served.

No, but they should be qualified in knowledge in that area and many others. Since people vote for the popular person, few are qualified for president, much less janitors. No slants to janitors, I've done it, but it is a compliment that if they had money like candidates, they would be qualified. +5

I think that it would help them to better understand that particular aspect of the job, but I don't think that it should be a requirement for service in an elected position. If this had been a requirement for elected office, then we would have missed out on a number of our better presidents. For example, Thomas Jefferson never served in the military.
