Please Help!! I need help with a math/chemistry problem: What percent of the total mass of one atom of iron comes from electrons. The mass of one iron atom is 9.274 x 10^-23. The mass of one electron is 9.110x10^-28. Please show the steps. Thank You!!

The above answere assumed iron has only one electron .. it has many ... iron in its metallic state has 26 electrons... (determine that from the 26 protrons .. its position on the periodic table) so take
    26 x 9.11x10^-28 = mass of electrons = 236.86x10^-28
    divide that by total mass = 236.86x10-28 / 9.274x10^-23

lets get rid of all this 10^-28 crap by mutipling both the numerator and denominator by 10^+28 giving..

    236.86/9.274x10^5 = 236.86/927400 = 0.0002554
    x100 to give percent = 0.02554%
the same answer as above when multiplied by the 26 (number of electrons)

one final note .. you said the total weight of the aton was 9.274x10^-23 .. I hoped you included the weight of the electrons in that weight ... it will only change the answer slightly if you didn't..

hope you find this worthy of points...

Just take the smaller number, and divide it by the larger number. You'll get a number less than one. Turn that into a percent by moving the decimal two spaces to the right.

    Youll have (9.110x10^-28) / (9.274 x 10^-23).

    On paper you'd divide the 9.110 / 9.274 to get .9823.
Then take the numerator's exponent (-28), and subtract the denomenator's exponent (-25). Minus a negative is the same thing as plus a positive...so it will be -28 + 25...of -5.

Your final answer (in decimal form) is .9823 X 10^-5.
This is .000009823 in standard notation..or (moving the decimal two spaces to the right for percent):

    .0009823%.

You may want to double check my math...I don't have access to a scientific calculator.

Good Luck! I always hated chemistry.
