Legend has it that Vincent van Gogh did not cut off his entire ear but cut off the earlobes of one of his ears (left or right is not documented) and mailed it to his lover as a token of his love.
Some say hid did that in a fit of rage - but this too is not confirmed.
Also the name of his lover who received his earlobe by mail is not documented.
In the absence of any documentation it is really doubtful if Van Gogh did do the act that is ascribed to him.
If I remember correctly he gave it to his girlfriend (or some girl) because he was suffering from some mental disorder at the time. (People say it was epilepsy but they have since decided it couldn't have contributed to all his incidents, so it has to be some form of pychosis).
