Clearly, poor little Newt was unwanted and despised by his parents, which would also explain the twisted and perverse mental condition he's carried into adulthood.
She was probably thinking that Newton was a cute name. I love the name Newton, I think its really cute, and I think the nickname newt is even cuter.
She was thinking, "I'll call him Newton.", not realising that it would become abbreviated to Newt.
Talk about living down to one's moniker.
