Is there any penalty for swinging a two-handed weapon with a single hand? If so, what is the penalty and is there any way to lower it? I don't want to wield a larger two-hander, just use a different fighting style, I suppose.

depends what supplements you got? monkey grip is a feat relating to this basic rules (from the phb p 113 right side halfway down page) a -2 penalty applies and you dont get the extra two hand weapon damage basically treat the great sword as a large sized 1 hand weapon
