    Mask in school?

That alone is enough to shut down the whole school.

The parents apparently do not want their child to stay home because of the inconvenience on them.

Bottom line, when the mask appeared in school, my child would not be there.

Who knows, a mask may be no protection at all from H1N1. its new and not all is known about its effects on humans.

Do you think a day at school is soooo important that it's worth spreading an infection to anyone else? Please. Keep the kid home. The educational system in this country doesn't even lend itself to worrying about missing a day anyway.

No... pretty selfish, you can't risk affecting other people's education for the sake of one. If the mum was that bothered, she should have asked for work to be sent home, so that the daughter could carry on studying. Better than nothing.

No she must stay home for tow reasons :-
I-to rest herself "thus is important to influenza patient "
II- the face mask is not so effective protection method
So please if you have flu just stay home ,rest yourself and forget about face masks !
    Good question +2

The parents were totally irresponsible. And apart from anything else, if she really had swine flu she would have been too ill to be in school.

no way that is not right, putting other people at risk as well even if you have a mask what's to say it would be effective.

Who would be selfish enough to risk the health and educational success of hundreds of people, just for one kid? Make the kid stay home for a week!!

I had H1N1, and it kind of sucked. There is no way that girl would be learning anyway, she'd be too busy trying not to fall asleep or vomit. The parents should just let her have some time off.

I have not seen the article but am a bit confused by the premise... What is meant by ill?

We've all had flu's and know how it feels, so I can't imagine any parent would send a child that ill to school. If they do, I think they should face charges for child abuse. (emotional response, I am not sure if legaly this would qualify)

If she had been exposed to it, was possibly a carrier, but was not actualy ill (exhibiting symptoms), how would anyone know?

children are not supposed to come to school sick, and if they do, they should be sent home

H1N1, flu, or just plain colds, diseases spread, quite literally from the mouths of babes. children who are sick don't cover their mouths or wash their hands, they touch everything, and they run around and see more people and things, while incubating, while sick, while mostly better but still contagious but felt well enough to play with friends/go to school anyway

And for all you adults who get sick and take some over-the-counter medicine so that you can get through your day, you're doing exactly the same thing.

The first thing the CDC tells you, is if you think you have the flu, don't go anywhere. Stay at home until you feel better (and if you have a fever, 24 hours after the fever breaks). Then they say, if you get the following severe symptoms, go to the ER right away. Under these conditions contact your doctor, under these, go to the ER. Otherwise, stay at home.

Some hospitals now have these large signs at all of their entrances thanking you for staying home when you have the flu and not bring your germs with you (in nicer language of course). Waiting rooms have face masks and hand sanitizer. Specific instructions to inform someone if you are sick so that you can be taken elsewhere and not contaminate the building and kill all the nice people in it.

Seriously, how hard is it? If you're sick, stay home. If everyone did that, we'd all be sick a lot less.

Lets look at another possibility of why this students mother "wanted" her to go to school, in spite of her illness.

Of course it was stupid on her mothers part, so you have to ask yourself why the mother insisted.

Maybe, the mother had her day planned for something and her daughter staying home would have upset the applecart.

    Possible?

No. I would not even bother sending them. I see how bad the flu makes one feel, so I would not send my child to school and take the risk of them spreading it and making others sick potentially.
