Because if an inmate is truly guilty of a very serious and heinous crime of violence, for example, a prison will (hopefully) prevent him/her from harming other human beings outside of the confines of the prison.

From the prisoners standpoint, prisons are benefical for their life to live.
Its beats execution for them.
they house the guilty
I dont believe they are beneficial in the way that they are suppose to wor, that being rehabilitation of a life of crime. But they do keep violent offenders off the street away from the public. However, once released back into public the offender is usually worse than before.

When people are guilty of probation violation why aren't they just tossed in jail? Why no consequences in some cases except a lecture?
