    When you run a program, or a program loads a file it reads the data from your hard drive into the computer memory. Memory can be read from and written to MUCH faster than your hard drive can. Some applications (games, video and image processors) can use several GB of memory at one time.

    More memory means that more applications can use your FASTER memory at the same time and fewer of the programs running need to use the hard drive. Memory generally speeds up your computer and can have a big impact if you are running large programs.
