before all of those were invented most people would have done all manual labour, and their nails would not have grown very long any way- i guess haha When i do work with my hands my nails snap off straight away!

I think that back then, nails were used as valuable tools of the hand, like fingers themselves. They would naturally break off before they had the chance to get in the way. It wasn't until later on that people began to take care of them cosmetically.
