Help answer this question below.
Some cats are stubborn and just choose to ignore you,but most cat's I've had and the one I currently have all come when I call their name. It's best to start doing this while they are a kitten. If you get one who's older or had a previous name or owner it might be harder or impossible to get them to come to you.Inticing(sp?) with treats such as catnip while calling it's name might work. Not all cats will do that, but most I think, can be taught with patience and persistance.I hope this offers some insight.
Most of my cats know their names (we accumulate them from people dumping them on our farm). My tips: Keep the name simple and the way your voice sounds. Somehow Riley and Ollie can decipher whom I'm yelling for and TiTi (Titus) knows as well. When I have alone time with them I will tell the cat I have (for instance) "That's a good Riley" and I make sure it's the same tone everytime (Rhy-Lee)
I do the drdrdrd(kinda hard to spell).Roll it off your toung. He comes running every time. It's the same noise he makes in mid flight to my face after succesfully sneaking up and scaring the crap out out of me.
My cat comes when I call her. That may have to do with the fact that many times I make sure to pet her or hold her (she likes to be held) when she does come. Basically it's positive reinforcement, which could be a system to use to get a cat to come when it's called.
No guarantee though. I think this wall hanging I saw says it best:
"Dogs come when they are called. Cats take a message and get back to you."
Both of mine did...just from calling them over and over I suppose...untill they were eaten by cyotes a couple weeks ago
i clang their food bowl or their canned treat together and they come running, sometimes the older cat will come when i call her name, it's rare though
My Friends cat didn't have a name, came everytime you buzzed the electric can opener. Teach a name that sounds like ...an electric can opener.
My cats come when called.Atleast one comes when I whistle!..Not all have learned yet. They like me.They watch and follow me around.Sundae always comes and I pet her. She loves affection.Zeke stands on his back legs and puts his front paws on my shoulders trying to get into my face.He wants to touch noses..Most are very affectionate. The ones who aren`t are shy or afraid.I think you have to win their love,by never being mean, always nice...I don`t try to train them at all.I just love them and they love me too. When an unknown person comes to our house they disappear.Being careful is sometimes necessary when you are smaller than nearly everyone else....Plus they are great mothers and fathers. They will fight with Big dogs to protect their babies. And they appreciate it when I run the dogs away...Lots of misunderstandings about cats.Maybe they just like to be mysterious.Maybe people just don`t listen hard enough to understand. It sometimes takes time.
My cat, Snowbell, does. I tested this theory to be sure she wasn't responding to a familiar voice, but to her name. She can be anywhere in the house while I am talking and not come to me so I know it's not my voice. As soon as I say Snowbell she comes to me and if I don't pick her up she stands on her back legs and stretches upword putting her paws on my knees just like a dog does. It is so cute. She is the most amazing cat I have ever had. When I look at her, eye contact, and say meow (making it sound like a meow) she meows back. We can do that back and forth for a while and she don't get bored with it. She definately talks to me. She sleeps on my pillow and leans up against my face or neck at night. She snuggles with me and paws my shoulders or neck until she falls asleep. She is declawed so this doesn't harm me. If it did I wouldn't let her. It is like a massage. It is interesting that no matter where I am in the house to where she is in the house if I lay down and get relaxed for a few minutes she comes to me and sleeps on my pillow with me. Anytime day or night! She has won the heart of everyone in my family. That is hard to do because a lot of them don't like animals in the house, but don't mind her because she just is so precious. She is always happy to see us and is the sweetest and most affectionate cat I have ever had. I know it isn't recommeded, but I gave her a bath once and I could tell she didn't like it, but she was calm and mellow about it with me. Just the most gentle cat. She is our Snowbell. To answer your question, yes!
I used to, but that cat just adored me anyways. However, she never really knew her name; she just came to me whenever it seemed like I was paying even the least bit of attention to her.
In fact, most of my cat's never equated the sound of a particular word with, "That's me!". Well, not unless our cats thought were names were "HEY!" or "Don't chew on that!".
For the most part, you can only teach a cat what it wants to learn. They *can* learn, but you can't really teach them.
If it is inclined to come to you anyways, then it will teach itself and if not then good luck. A reward system *might* make it inclined to come to you, but aside from that, cats are too independent to be taught.
I thought my cat to sit and sit up. We are working on laydown. The thing with a cat is, they have to be able to see their reward the entire time. If they lose sight of it for even a split second they will lose intrest and wonder off. I would just have a bag of treats and keep making the cat come to you, rewarding him/her everytime. I think eventually they will get it and you'll be able to make them come to you without treats. My cat will sit sometimes without treats.
When my cats been outside I stick my head out the window and call his name and he comes running, howling his head off! I don't know why he does this but it works every time!. Recently I bought some cat treats for him. He loves them and every time I rattle the box they come in he's by my ankles in 2 seconds! Its great for when you want him to go somewhere you just shake the box! Try it! It might work! Its quite difficult though when you rattle something else by accident and he expects a treat.
every cat i've ever had the pleasure of living with have all come when i've called. all except for one...Pookie. he was a stubborn little mitt from the day he was born. but i broke him. i buy whiskas Temptations cat treats ( which he LOVES ). the treats come in a very noisy bag. all i have to do is shake the bag & now Pookie is the first one to the door. sometimes you just have to use your imagination. good luck!
