There's nothing in it, seriously. So I know it balances beautifully. +5

I always balance it, but I know it's wrong. I never add the change when a deposit is made to my check book account and have been doing this for about 10 years. So, I have quite a bit more in the checking account then what it shows.

I stopped actually balancing it each month when I stopped using cheques (seriously, I use one cheque a year for one bill from one company that still insists on them). However I do look at the statement each month to make sure all the transactions are legit, and I watch the balance weekly to monitor my spending.

I have never balanced my checkbook, ever. I do have a rough idea how much is in there though. Worst case scenario is I'm off a little, but I have overdraft protection.

My 3 bank account statements and my own account books must tally and correspond to one another as a matter of necessity.
If there is any discrepancy, I must make a reconciliation statement detailing the reasons for the differences.
The Income Tax Department here in India is very particular about our account books being maintained and balanced every month.
We don't want trouble with the Income Tax people, do we?

Yes I balance my accounts. Mistakes are rare but can happen and it pays to catch them early. +5

Former internal auditor/accountant here. I balance my checking account and Jim's checking account to the penny each month. Before Jim and I met, he just relied on what the bank told him and never bothered to reconcile his bank statement. That all changed. I showed him how to do it and after I knew he had it down pat I do both each month. I found mistakes made by the bank which were not on his behalf...once he found that out, he was a convert. I wrote a check once for $3.95 on my account and the bank charged my account for $395.00! Yep...banks are not perfect by a long shot! :) ((hugs))

I never balance my checkbook. I do keep track of cashed checks and deposits though. To me the amt of work/hassle in getting it to balance is not worth it. The downside is that if the credit union makes a mistake , I will have an impossible time showing proof.

These day, with online access to my acct, it's possible to catch things quickly. So far so good.

I don't balance my checking account each month. I go online each day and check my balance. Most of my bills are paid by debit card.

My wife writes checks and pays bills, we both use a debit card on the same account and we balance it out each month. Always want to know if anything got charged to our account in error, checks have all come in and there are no mistakes. We have found a few minor ones in the past.

We have had to call people and tell them to cash our check. For that reason alone it's a good idea.
