Lasting more then a month? Seriously, there is something wrong with your dog. You really need to get him/her into see a vet. There is NO GOOD REASON for this to be happening to your dog. ASAP get to the VET! Your dog is sick! +5

The vet. This is not something you treat at home long term.

First off, sometimes folks see "soft serve" and assume it it diarrhea...THAT'S NOT DIARRHEA! It's not a great stool, but it's not the same as diarrhea.

Diarrhea is very, very WATERY, which is why we would worry about hydration...if the dog is loosing a lot of water in the stool, then the dog is at risk for dehydrating.

Back in the day, before I learned and began to feed a Species Appropriate Raw diet, I would have used some plain canned pumpkin to help firm up the stool.

Cheese won't help, it's a fat and fats loosen stools for dogs. COOKED meats won't hurt, but why screw up perfectly good nutritious RAW MEAT with heat which robs it of the nutritional values?

The types of "normal" bacteria that most dogs could come into contact with, are NOT going to be a problem or issue for a HEALTHY DOG. Dog's stomach acid is about 10 times stronger than humans. THEY do not have any issues with Salmonella at all...unlike us.

I've fed my dogs chicken that was in the meat drawer of the fridge for about 5 days, and as far as I'm concerned...IT STANK! They, on the other hand, were full of joy and acted as if it came with "Special Marinade" AND they had no ill reactions from crunching it right down, stench, bones and meat.

Raw bones are SAFE and chicken bones are the softest.

ALL COOKED BONES ARE DANGEROUS, because cooking causes the bone to become brittle and can result in sharp shards that are NOT safe for man nor beast!

You mention that this is an older dog. Has he had any opportunity to drink water from a pond, stream, lake?

    He may have gotten Giardia.

What are the signs of a Giardia infection?

Most infections with Giardia are asymptomatic. In the rare cases in which disease occurs, younger animals are usually affected, and the usual sign is diarrhea. The diarrhea may be acute, intermittent, or chronic. Usually the infected animals will not lose their appetite, but they may lose weight. The feces are often abnormal, being pale, having a bad odor, and appearing greasy. In the intestine, Giardia prevents proper absorption of nutrients, damages the delicate intestinal lining, and interferes with digestion.

Did your Vet test for THIS? It usually doesn't have a profound effect on a healthy adult dog, more often causes problems for puppies, or older adult dogs who may not have the strongest immune system to start with!

If you are feeding kibble, you may want to consider trying a Species appropriate diet.

I'm saving money feeding meat, in Vet bills, (my vet was not originally keen on it, but after a year plus, SHE now says that kibble is crap, no longer sells it in her office and is THRILLED the my dog's and cats general health, teeth, coats, and the whole of their condition.

I also often score a ton of FREE MEATS! Off of Craigslist, and from my local Freecycle group! Most recently I got nearly 100 pounds of GRASS FED beef that had been in the freezer since the day it was processed about three years ago...nothing wrong with it.

Another guy gave me about 65 pounds of beautiful Deer meat and he plans to take a trip out to WA state (we are in PA) to go elk hunting this month, if he scores, I SCORE TOO, because only he and his dog will eat game, his wife doesn't like it and he said he will call me to come and get some of his bounty! God bless our local hunters! Taxidermist can also be a great source of free meat (deer, elk, moose...I do not feed a meat eating animal to a meat eating animal, that's just my own personal preference).

Switching your dog to raw, will not only up his pleasure and enjoyment of eating, it will save you money AND BUILD HIS IMMUNE SYSTEM!

You have nothing to loose by learning more about this...so read up my friend. My only regret is that I took way too long to make the change...lol I researched it to death, and it really was overkill on my part to take so blooming long.

If you already went to the vet and they say nothing is wrong then I think you should go to a different vet. Diarrhea should not last for a month.

The best medicine is an owner that cares enough to go from vet to vet until they find one that can help.

One trip to a vet that checked the stools for blood, is not caring for an animal. Does the vet even know it has not stopped? Or how long it has been going on?

If it was going on for that long, I would bring the dog to a vet. Or, if that's not possible at the moment, I would consider changing food brands. Is it wet food or solid food?
But, as everyone is saying, the vet is your best bet for your pet.

    Whoa, I'm a poet, dude.
