People who are involved with an addicted person should just leave -- there is no "helping" the addict, until the addict admits they need help -- which is often too late -- the crack head tried to recover, but was so changed and brain damaged that he never fit back into the social group. That one was particularly tragic, because he had a young son that he loved, but it was not safe for the son to be around his father alone, and the father had alienated everybody else in the family, so there was nobody to chaperon him with his son.
