  • I'm reminded of asking my elemetary teacher, "Can I go to the restroom?" To which she would reply, "I don't know. Can you?" Me: "MAY I go to the restroom?" Teacher: "Yes, you may." The United Nations does have means of exerting pressure on misbehaving nations, up to and including a use of force. So the answer is similar: they MAY. The CAN requires political will and courage, which are so often in short supply.
  • i beg to differ with jalex137. The un can and does exert influence and pressure upon member nations to align most laws and social and economic standards to that of the global community. it is called global democracy. all for one one for all all the same. i suggest you google the un charter and read for yourself the charters mandates, then compare them with our current social, political, economic, military, and so on and so forth, policies. you will see for yourself.
  • The member nations do not have to anything to change their social policies! But the rest of the world doesn't have to be so accommodating when it comes to trade and other forms of exchange between nations! It would be best if they all remembered they aren't alone in this world!
