It goes off a few times a day, when I go through and check everything, but does tend to turn right back on in not too long...

Mine usually stays on even after I go to the new comments and then refresh my profile.
The only way I can extinguish mine is to click on "Mark all as read".

It seems like the comments lag a while because it shows everything read but the light is still on.

Once mine lights it is sometimes a challenge to make it go out. Often even though I've checked all the new comments it will stay there for a while.
