Shame on Roman Polanski for having sex with a 13year old when he was 44. Then, skipping out of the country for 30 years so he didn't have to face the music.

Congratulations, Switzerland, for showing the world that you don't cater to child molesters, even when they are rich and famous, whether someone told you to do it or not. Bravo!

Roman Polansky drugged and raped a 13 year old. I don't care how "great" his talents are percieved. He is a criminal who ran. That to me is sickening. He should have paid for this crime a long time ago. Protecting the rights of children above the "special rich" is not being a bully. A crime does not go away because time marches on.

Within international law, it is perfectly normal for civilized countries to cooperate with one another in that way. One country will often arrest and hand over a criminal to another. This is no different. Would you expect them to arrest and hand over a terrorist if he were there?

As I seem to recall, he drugged the girl and then raped and sodomised her whilst she was unconscious.

For my tuppence, he is in serious need of a round through the head.

Yeah, I guess criminals should get off scot free, and extradition treaties mean nothing.

He committed multiple felonies, not the least of which was escaping prosecution.

The victim no longer wants him prosecuted, she settled out of court for damages. The court however, has not settled for his felonious act of escape from prosecution.

He needs to be held accountable for his actions. His fame or 'artistic talent' does not make him above prosecution and when he ran, the statute of limitations clock stopped.

He needs to stand in court.

No. I do not believe in letting criminals get away with things just because they are famous. And extradition treaties, properly administered, are a good thing: you return our criminals, we'll return yours. Do you want murderers and rapists to be able to cross a border and get away with their crimes?

There is no statue of limitations for raping a 13 year old nor is there one for running away from justice in the US. He committed the crimes, so he needs to be tried for them, even 30 years later.

Shame on the world for making an example out of a 70-something year old man who was obviously the victim of a teenage girl trying to screw her way to fame and fortune.

Downrate if you want, but you tell me how many of you ask for ID before every drunken one-night-stand at a party. For that matter, tell me this would even have OCCURRED, had Roman Polanski not been a famous director. Any other person wouldn't be worth batting an eye over, much less be tracked down after thirty years and shipped over international borders. It would be WAY too expensive.

    "Bully Uncle Sam"???

    Riiiiiight.

There are two sides, at least, to any story. She was 13, he was 44. The burden of proof of age rests with the older person, regardless of the age of the minor. Don't gotta like it, that's just the way it is.

Perhaps it was an honest mistake. Perhaps not. That's NOT the point here. And certainly all this can come out in the courts, as it should.

I think it's pretty d*mn telling from the perspective of Hollywood where their morals lie in this matter:

"Weinstein entered the fray at the personal behest of Cannes film festival director Thierry Fremaux and will now use his considerable influence and campaigning heft to enlist the support of Hollywood."

Weinstein also said "We're calling on every film-maker we can to help fix this terrible situation."

Weinstein isn't trying to "...help fix this terrible situation", he's trying to get Polanski out of being held responsible for his actions.

Wah. I have no pity on the man.

The fact is that Roman Polanski RAN from the US more than 30 years ago AFTER PLEADING GUILTY TO THE UNLAWFUL SEXUAL INTERCOURSE CHARGES". He's NOT being tried for the crime, he's being held accountable for it. He MAY also be tried for running as well.

Goldstein said: "I think Polanski has already paid a horrible, soul-wrenching price for the infamy surrounding his actions. The real tragedy is that he will always, till his death, be snubbed and stalked and confronted by people who think the price he has already paid isn't enough."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Polanski

Really? He's suffered these last 31 years? Gee I count TEN movies he's directed in that time, 28 nominations for Oscars and 8 actual Oscars awarded. And at least nine movies he's starred in. Not to mention two books since 1978 as well, and numerous interviews. And not to mention dozens of other books he probably gets royalties for being the subject in.

He's had 31 YEARS to fight this, but has been content to lay low where the U.S. had no extridition treaties. NOW it's a big deal when he get's caught where he can be extradited?

"Will media accounts point out that Polanski was treated differently because of his wealth and fame? He got a lenient plea deal largely because the prosecution was worried about the girl’s willingness to testify in the face of international publicity surrounding a trial in which Polanski’s team planned to paint her as a 13-year-old harlot — an example of fame stacking the deck. And that victim now supports dismissal of the case . . . now that she has settled a civil suit with him for an undisclosed amount — an example of wealth stacking the deck."

(There is a link to some of the court documents there. Find your own if you wish.)

Wah. Boo Hoo. I'm all broke up over his misfortune.

I just can't help but to point something out here. It is the left-wing of the political spectrum that is constantly protesting over the unfair treatment that the downtrodden receive at the hands of the powerful. Let someone like Clarence Thomas be accused of sexual harassment and they go ballistic. How many of you remember how vitriolic their attacks on him got? To listen to them, he was one of the worst people ever to walk the planet.

However, let one of their own be caught doing something worse and watch how they circle the wagons. Lady Alathia of Vulcan has even gone so far as to blame the victim for what happened. We have been told by these same people that we are not supposed to do that. They have condemned anyone who might dare to suggest that rape victims would lie about such things.

So, to all who would defend this pervert, I have a question for you. HAVE YOU NO SHAME!?! This man drugged a thirteen-year-old girl into a state where she was complete helpless before him. He then raped and sodomized her. This is a crime no matter what her age was. Then because of his wealth and power, he was allowed to plea guilty to a lesser crime. When it became apparent that the plea bargain was not going to be accepted by the court, he fled from justice to a country that would protect him from extradition. He has spent 30 years living and working while his colleagues heap praise and accolades on him.

Polanski has not been punished for his crimes. It is long past time that he was. All of those who are defending him are just showing their own hypocrisy. Every one of you who is defending this pervert should be ashamed of yourselves.

Switzerland's leadership is changing to reflect the world's ideas and standards. They also need to cooperate with others in order to receive like cooperation.
It appears the French and Poles still think an older man's sex with children is acceptable. Shame on them. Hurray for Switzerland!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't know what this portends. if switzerland arrests polanski, maybe canada will arrest cheney and bush for international war crimes violations? the rule of law is the rule of law. i'm surprised that he hadn't been charged before now. i just read that switzerland's per capita gross domestic product is 2.5 times that of the US. folks must be rich there!!! the us sure can bully, look at what it did to iraq! are they applying pressure to switzerland or just diplomatically requesting? :)

Ideally he should be brought back for his crime, but it's my understanding that because of LA County's very limited budget, there is a backlog of unprocessed rape kits that are in danger of becoming unusable because of the idiotic statute of limitations that exists for prosecuting rape.

I think those should be given priority over a 32-years old statutory rape case.
