- True people like that need to be humbled some. Take away all their excessive crap and just let them live at the poverty level- that might change their way of thinking... But to argue my own point... if they earn that money dont they have a right to enjoy it as they wish?? Dunno... large earrings are still silly lol

Extravagant events where leftover food is thrown in the dumpster vs. taking it to the local shelter to feed the impoverished or homeless.

- I totally agree with yhou when it comes to wasting food ..... can't help but wonder what any third world peoples would say if they saw how truly wasteful we are! Our pets eat better than some people ...... even right here in the U.S.A.!
  I really don't care if someone buys huge diamonds, etc. - it's their money.
  On the other side of the coin, though, I would like to see more wealthy people help alleviate hunger everywhere. Plenty of churches operate food pantries and soup kitchens, but that is just a tiny part of what is needed. Perhaps the "real" wealthy people who help feed the poor don't feel a need to make a show of it.

For "Conspicuous Consumer of the Year" I nominate the anonymous person who recently purchased the Hope Diamond.
What good does that do for anyone who is standing in line to get something to eat at a soup kitchen.

Sure...Robert Hansen, the FBI agent who was arrested for spying on behalf of the Russians for 25 years, was betrayed by his ownership of very, very expensive high-dollar items. It was this "conspicuous consumption" that focused the suspicions of FBI investigators on Hansen. They were already aware that there was a "mole" in the FBI, but Hansen's high-dollar items that couldn't be readily accounted for on his federal salary alone drew their attention.
