Acer used to get bad reviews. I don't know how they rank currently. Despite the reviews, i know a couple people with cheap Acer systems that have not complained to me about them and trust me, i am the one they call with computer problems.
I have an Acer Aspire 1640z. I've had it for a few years and am only waiting for the new computers with Windows 7 preinstalled to replace it. I have never had it in the shop. I really love the screen and the keyboard. But I will not buy another one. When I got it, it said it had a 100GB hard drive, but that 100GB drive is split into two partitions of 50GB each, with no way to change it to a single partition. Both 'drives' were formatted FAT, so the first thing I had to do was reformat them to NTFS. Not a big deal, but why? It came with Acer Empowering Technology software preinstalled. The only time I've ever used it, is when it loses the sound drivers. When I shut it down and turn it back on, likely as not the sound will have disappeared. So I have to open their Empowering crap, jump through a bunch of hoops, reinstall the sound drivers, and restart the machine again. As a consequence I only shut it down when I have to. Three inquiries to Acer got no response. That alone would preclude my buying another one.
Acer is like Hyundai; they used to be crap when they first came out, but over the years they have improved greatly. They are now comparable to (and in some cases, better than) the competition, but they still have the low-end price tags.
One thing I've noticed is that the Acer Aspire One is faster than many netbooks (even in benchmarks) yet is amongst the least expensive as well, and they are pretty durable and well-built too.
The Gemstone Blue line also gets high marks.
I have an Acer it is as good as any over priced Dell. I never heard of Acre. We have had every brand in this house.
I have been an HP person up until now. My 4-year-old Pavilion is about at the end of its rope so I've been searching. Because of my retirement budget I can't justify buying what I really want, the best of the 15" Mac Pros which goes for over 2000 bucks. I understand why people would go for Mac's superior operating system and I'm also aware of how much better the physical engineering is over PCs but the Macs are just too expensive - even for this retired college professor.
Since I'm not a gamer I have just about concluded that the Acer 5536 could easily satisfy my needs and then some. Take a look at it.
I'm using an Acer at the moment, and haven't had any problems with it.
They are good midrange laptops, The Acer one netbook is small and compact and a good seller, the Extensa range is their best laptop product.
Their top range laptops are dog food. The only issues with Acers are their reliability but spec, look and price wise they are good value.
Dell make the best computers and making your own is often the most reliable and cheapest although you'll have diffilculty in making a laptop from scratch
If you mean Acer, they're a very good value for the price...I bought a Gateway in August (on which I'm writing this), and I believe the salesman told me that Gateway and Acer have merged, or maybe Gateway has taken over Acer...anyway, I'm very satisfied with it...

+4 alluseek for a good answer.
My Husband is the one everyone at work or in the family turns to for Computer problems. He took some Programing. He fixes them at work too. He was actually a business major but he figures everything out. He got me this Acer on line from Costco. It has a web cam too and I like it a lot.
