'Cars' are short for 'carriages'. The first cars were sometimes called 'horseless carriages'.

At first they called them "motor carriages",
but then "motorcars", and finally just "cars"
as their popularity grew.

According to someone on the web it originated from the word chariot. That's all I could muster on here without having to sign up to something to find more.
It originates from the word carriage...as in horse and carriage, or horseless carriage.
