How do we explain dogs breeding and why it takes a female & male dog? She is a very smart & curious 6 yr. old. She is wondering why her female lab needs a boyfriend to make puppies.

I suggest using the old saying - "when a lady dog and a man dog fall in love, they make babies, but that need to be a lady and a man because if it was a lady and a lady the dogs will turn out wacko". She is gonna find out sooner or later and I recommend sooner rather than later.

If she's old enough to be asking the question, then she's old enough to get a straight answer. I think now may be the time to explain the birds and the bees. Just don't sugarcoat things or make up pretend scenarios. Just because they are young, doesn't mean they need to live in a fantasy world.
