It is more dense. You pack trash down, but you pack groceries lightly as to not damage them.

    Short answer: junk mail
long(er) answer: your garbage is made up of more than your groceries (including junk mail, newspapers, etc.) Also, a large portion of your groceries go down the commode -- not to the curb!

Do you have young children? Diapers always weigh more when used.

Maybe your cooking isn't as great as you think it is. Try take-out and you'll see a big difference.

I'm not certain that this is true, but an explanation is quite straightforward: the groceries you purchase represent only one of the many items that end up in the waste stream. The garbage from your house contains material from many sources, not just the groceries (e.g., magazines, newpapers, furniture, electronics, boxes, packaging materials, wood, clothing, metals).

Because garbage accumulates over a longer time than one quick trip to the shops.

As I was sayin, we can pack three to five bags of groceries into one trash bag, after we have cooked, eaten or emptied the containers. Just don't step on the scale. tingirl
