  • Phlegm is a natural nasty phenomenon in the throat. It coats your vocal folds in mucous and therefore causes one not to sing well. An easy way to get rid of this is to incoporate around a half gallon of water into your diet everyday. Water washes away everything on the cords, keeps them moist, and keeps you healthy. Happy drinking! Sparrow
  • Yes, phlegm is a bad one to have for singers. Most of us get it at least during the cold months. It is the thickness that will determine how difficult it is to sing with. I agree that water is good for your singing voice, but it does not "wash away phlem from you cords". Since the vocal folds are in the trachea (windpipe) how could drinking water possibly have any contact with your vocal folds? If it did, you would cough like a madman. What it does do is help to thin the mucus, thereby making it much easier to clear away by coughing or by singing. Another great treatment is a medicine called Humibid (guaffenesine). This thins out the mucus to clear very easily and, unlike antihistamines, it will not cause the blood vessels to spread to the surface, which risks hemmoraging of the vocal folds. (NEVER sing with antihistamines!). But, as with every other kind of medicine, you will have to drik plenty of water with it, for it can cause some dryness.
  • I've been looking for an answer for sooo long!! thank you so much!!
  • phlegm is nasty there is a method used by many singers all over the globe from christina aguilera to bill withers and thats honey and lemon tea its not for everyone i agree but it really does help
  • Yes phlegm does get in the way. You'll want to drink alot of water. I also talked to a lady I know, who's a professional singer and she said put a steamer in my room (there is another name for it) but it pumps out steam, and it keeps your throat clear. Oh, I think it's a humidifier. I heard some professional singers put at least 1-5 of these in their room, and it helps.
  • Yes. It also enhances your projectile range too.
  • Phlegm all by itself will not decrease your vocal range. It may alter the quality of the voice, but not the range. What will however effect your voice is the constant hacking and coughing to get rid of the phlegm! Guaffenesine works pretty well but it turns me in to a total spaz.
  • oh yeah it can irritate your cords. honey helps bit NOT do do lemon because it is acid and can irritate the cords also. water water water room temperature
  • One way to get rid of phlegm for all time that I have found (altho I dont sing)is food combining and/or cutting out wheat
  • does sugar free sparking water help any of the hacking? Lately I have been having a ton of hacking when I wake up . It's getting on my nerves and my roomates. Also take Sudafed for allergy/sinus probs. Any advice?
  • If it's on your vocal cords. Otherwise, no.
