He might have been compasionate fro their choice but would still not condone it.

I don't know if he was a homophobe but I hope he wasn't. To be discriminated against as he was all his life should have made him very sensitive to the plight of all those who are unfairly discriminated against. It would be very illlogical and irrational to perpetuate against others that which you had suffered from yourself. :)

Well, he was a Baptist minister, so I would not expect that he would be a supporter. However, we can't really know, can we?

I believe he would have made a distinction; believing that people of color had precedence over people who "chose to lead immoral lives” You can hide your lifestyle, but you can’t hide your skin color, anyway.

Somehow I don't think he would have been for them. Not just from his religous stance, but also coming from a black culture which is very partiarchal (male-dominated).
