Help answer this question below.

Some of the dvd tapes will play just fine but the others exactly the same with .avi on the end will only play audio but no video display,I'm using window media player 11 on my windows xp, what could be wrong?

    You don't have the proper video codecs to decode the video from the file. Easiest solution is to use a better media player such as media player classic:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
    or
    VLC media player:
    http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
    Both are free and should play your file just fine.
