Crackers have holes so that they don't crack when they expand and harden during baking.
-
The holes are placed in the dough to stop air pockets from forming in the cracker while baking.
-
I think it's so they don't burst open b/c the air inside needs to be released. Just like when firing clay, there needs to be an opening or else when you take it out of the kiln (oven) then it sure won't be the same object you put in haha b/c it'll be in pieces.

So they can sell them at a greater profit; same size for less product.....they make millions....!!!

So Australian kids can make "worms" when they have Vegemite on crackers!! I know that's not the real reason, but still :P

To make them even lighter....

The bubbles and bumps that might form without the holes are not attractive or uniform looking and they burst and then look downright messy. Holes are good.

They don't - I just went through a whole packet and not one had a hole in it ! I feel robbed now :-(
