Your question is a fair one and I certainly don't agree with tailgating. But if I may pose a question in return. So you're not intimidated by and don't yield to tailgaters. Is it worth remaining in that lane if you annoy one of these idiots enough to attempt or actually succeed in causing harm to you or your family? Because if they're willing to partake in this very unsafe and illegal driving practice, how do you know they don't also have a gun on their seat? Living in New York, it certainly happens. I actually heard a related story of a guy who was pissed off because he thought someone cut in front of him at a McDonalds drive-thru. He got out of his car and shot him. And proceeded to collect his order before driving away. This is the world we live in. Some things just aren't worth taking a chance over. Let the idiots pass.
Sorry, this is not an answer to your question, but I'm taking this opportunity to vent a little. I go the speed limit. ALWAYS. I have kids, I need to set a good example. The other day these jackasses were tailgating me, in a 45, wooded area, double yellow lines, curves in the road. I kept checking in my mirror, I had a feeling they were goint to pass even though it would have been very unsafe, so I kept an eye on them. The next thing I knew, they were zooming past me on the RIGHT, IN THE SHOULDER!!! I wish I had a cell phone, I would have called the police.
My dad actually starts slamming on his brakes in unpredictable patterns when someone starts tailgating. It's pretty hilarious, and it stops the tailgaters in their tracks.
I am an occasional tailgater. and it usually happens when people are driving slower than than the posted speed limit. I had a driver doing 25 in a 45. Or when there is law inforcement at the side of the road. WHY DO PEOPLE SLOW DOWN TO ALMOST 15 mph in a 65 mph. Does it excite people to see a head decapitation, or blood and guts spewed all over the road. Are we afraid we will get a ticket if we don't slow down. I do believe in being aware of what's happening along the side. I've noticed that people who tailgate me are in there teens to mid 20's and in a hurry because I am usually at or slightly above the speed limit. I've seen multiple car crashes because of tailgating. Illegal, yes. Uneforcable most likely. Most law enforcement seem to ignore it. In this area I have seen it many times when the law would drive right past a half dozen tailgaters.

You're reading I'm that guy who isn't intimidated by and doesn't yield to tailgaters (people who follow too closely while driving). If you yourself are a tailgater, why can't you understand that it's a very unsfe and therefore illegal driving practice?

Good points, Gtravels. I am cognizant of what you're saying, and I do take precautions, I'm wary of red-flags warnings. I live and drive in a place where the same potential exists for vehicular violence.
.
At the same time, they're not worried about annoying ME, and the multitudes of other law-abiding drivers out there.

Part of the reason I posted this was to see if any of them would be brave enough to dialog about their actions. Let's see what we get. We may all learn something productive from each other.
