Honestly, the easiest and cheapest way to do this is to take your car to AutoZone or Advance (or another parts store that offers this) and they will hook up a diagnostic reader to your vehicle and read out the fault codes for you for free.
It only takes a couple minutes.

what type of diagnostic test? do you mean an OBD2 test? if so then you hook up the computer to the port under the dash.
