Question

Help answer this question below.

I'm not a professional photographer who likes to take pictures of humming birds in flight. I would like to buy a good reasonably priced digital camera for vacations and holiday visits. Any suggestions? PS: This would be my "first" digital.

You need to decide which features are most important to you.

Since you want to take pictures of hummingbirds a good zoom would probably be benificial. When shopping for zoom it is important that you look for optical zoom, moreso than digital zoom. Optical zoom is when the lens accually moves closer the the subject of the photo and allows you to enlarge the picture to any size you would like. Digital zoom, on the other hand, zooms in on the pixels and will lead to distorted pictures when enlarged. (8x10 +)

Depending on where you are taking these pictures will decide how much zoom you need. It is really a personal preferance. If you have a birdfeeder that is near your house, and that is where you plan to takke the majority of your pictures a 3x or 4x optical zoom should work fine, but if you plan to go out to a flowery field to phograph them a 10x to 12x+ zoom would probably work better.

Another factor that is much talked about is megapixels. The number of megapixels you have is in direct proportion to how much you can enlarge something shot with digital zoom. The hightest I have seen so far is 10.8. 5 or 6 is considered good, while 7 is considered great, and 10.8 is incredibly fine. If you sacrifice optical zoom, you are going to want to make it up in megapixels.

Don't spend a fortune on you first digital camera. Buy something that has the features you like that is in the price range you can afford. That way, If you find out you use some features more or less than expected, you didn't drop a ton of money on it and you can get one more to your taste in a few years. This will give you time to develop and grow as a photographer and make a choice influenced by your own experiance for your second camera.

    Happy Shooting!

canon is accepted as having the best chips in their cameras and they have good lenses as well ... they offer a VERY wide range of choices so i'd suggest getting the best one you can afford
