Very true. I like your answer. So, how would you go about changing the war? How should we fight? And when do you think the war will be won?

I'm not sure we can win it anymore, we've managed to squander much of the support we had initially by screwing around and making the same mistakes. Take a village or area, its secured as Mr. Taliban crawls back into his cave, we leave he area as the forces are needed elsewhere in a month, six months, or a year, and Taliban is back. Why should the inhabitants support us when they know the Taliban will take their vengeance on them when we leave? IMO what we need to do is prove to the locals that we will be there for the long haul, will protect them from the Taliban, will help them improve their lives, build schools, roads, etc.. At the same time we need to make real use of our Special Forces who know how to fight the sort of dirty war the Taliban fight, we need to root them out of their caves, actively hunt them down and destroy them root and branch.

The above will be nasty and will take a very long term commitment but IMO is the only way we'll manage to win it. The Afghan people have to be convinced that we have their better interests at heart, that we will help them rebuild their shattered country and be there for the long haul without demanding they change their culture into a copy of ours (which they find repellent). We can't win it without them being willing to help us and the only way to do that is to show we are serious about wiping our the Taliban AND helping the innocent. If we do not do that, then we will merely end up doing as the British Empire and the USSR eventually did, leaving the country unchanged or more likely in a worse mess than we found it.
