mmm you can trace that all the way back to the colonies when the revolution started and the bostonians deicided to throw some tea overboard simply because they didnt want to pay the taxes on a cup of tea. then propaganda almost forced coffee down the throat of the populace

Not that I know the exact answer, but it probably goes hand in hand with the reason why the UK enjoys ales and the US chokes down lagers...

Because all of us British toffs jolly love our cup of tea! But seriously, I don't really know, it may be because tea was first introduced to the UK before it was introduced to America, and thus became more popular. Or Starbucks have just blown the whole thing out of proportion
