Despite the similarity in names, the roots of these words are different and the two elements are not related. Argon comes from Greek argos aptly meaning inactive (from a-, not and ergos, work) Argentum is Latin for silver. (wheras the Greek for silver is argyros). The original meaning of argentum is related to words for light.
