Good tires, no fluid leaks, good mileage.
Make sure the car has been well maintained, if the owner has the service records then you'll know. Or bring a mechanic with you when you check out the car. Make sure the car is known for reliability (MOST Honda's, Toyota's, Mazda's are), there's nothing worse than being broken down in the middle of nowhere. Good fuel mileage is nice. Nice firm seats are good one the back for long distances. You may want cruise control depending on how long you're driving.
