Televisions have a set resolution, and they use a different resolution than most computers. Often a lower one too, or at least lower than I usually run (1600x1200). I run into the opposite issue when viewing HD stuff on my computer; I get a big, black border.
It is quite possible that your HDTV is trying to mirror the laptop's main screen but just can't because it runs out of pixels. And since laptops and many desktops with an LCD monitor are limited in what resolutions they can support (my netbook only has 2 resolutions; 1024x600 and 800x600, the latter of which leaves black boxes at the sides of the screen.), I really don't know what you can do aside from try to lower the resolution on your laptop.
Why does my computer start lagging every 30 seconds or so?

You're reading My laptop (Advent 5711) drives an HD TV via HDMI but loses some of the picture around the edge. The setup only allows me to specify 'digital TV' and not a screen size or resolution. Any ideas?

MY Laptop has dual outputs so changing the main screen doesn't affect the second screen (TV). hey ho :-(

Mine only has VGA-out, but I *can* run them at different resolutions.
To the best of my knowledge though, a TV-out only supports standard TV resolutions.

Mine has VGA out and a seperte HDMI socket. But when plugged in I don't seem to have any options. The TV is HD though.
