One of the features in most of todays cars is that when the headlights come on the dash lights dim. It could be that the brightness switch on your vehicle is turned low and may be visible in daylight, but when the lights come on the display disappears. The switch on your vehicle would be the same one that turns on the dome light, try moving it up a little. On other cars it would be on the instrument cluster and is part of the odometer function, push it in and it cycles through trip and odometer settings, just turn that knob to the right.
