Help answer this question below.
I have provided an answer to this before and wanted to update the info. I have found a great non-profit website called ClaimUnemploymentBenefits.com that helps the unemployed file claims for unemployment. Tons of links to useful info and you can file online in most every state. I have found that there are many sites out there that seem to only be interested in selling you something but this site is different. They simply cut to the chase and give you direct links to your state unemployment office. I highly recommend it.
Check them out at http://www.claimunemploymentbenefits.com/
Go to the workforce site (example: I did a search for Texas Workforce) for your state and it will have instructions there. I filed online in Texas without ever having to go in person and my sister did the same in Arizona.
Depending on where you live, most likely you can't, you'll have to take the time to go fill out the paperwork in person. Sorry for that, wish it was different, would be easier on us all.
It really DOES depend on the state.
I am in an odd position in that, due to a timing fluke and all, I live 2500 miles away from the state I am collecting unemployment from.
New Hampshire allows people to file a new claim online, but only under certain conditions. If you live within 25 miles of an office, you *must* go in and file in person, though you can make your weekly claims online or by phone. Since I live >2500 miles away from their nearest office, I was allowed to file online.
Now, I don't know if the state you are trying to file in works that way or not though. For all I know, maybe you live someplace where they don't even use computers!
Why not just get a job?
Most all states provide a way to file online. The easiest way is to go to http://www.unemploymentlink.com where they have links to unemployment offices in every state. They also have links for local jobs too. There are some similar site but this is the best one. The other will charge you a fee.
