Is there a reason that foul language has become acceptable on AB?

Technically it's not, but it is effortless to get away with. It is probably more acceptable now because most people are okay with it. It doesn't bother them as much as the ToU says it should. That's great.

- +6 Just do not see the need when foul language is used to verbally abuse people. And I cannot say that I agree that most people are okay with it, certainly not in my circle of friends on here or in my life.

- I very rarely see people using foul language to abuse people, although I do see plenty of verbal abuse on this site without it. I can assure you, it's just as bad as if off limits words are used.
  I think many people are okay with it, and the rest don't consider it enough of a problem to get worked up about. This is clear by the fact that the rule against foul language is virtually unenforced. I've been saying whatever I wish for my whole time on this site, and I've only gotten in trouble for it once.

- O don't get me wrong I am not worked up about it. Just cannot for the life of me understand the double standards. Some questions get flagged and yet others do not. Does this then mean that AB staff have blue eyed people on here.

- The flags have been fucked up for a long time now. It has been said that the flagged posts are not reviewed thoroughly, and many of them simply get deleted without even having someone look at them. So, don't try to find sense there.

It may have become acceptable but not to everyone.
One possible explanation might be that people who use foul language believe that they are perceived as tough cookies, but all it does is, it proves a lack of style.

- Such language is also good to convey emotion and tone, something which is notoriously difficult to do in text.

- I think it is a sad day when you cannot convey emotion without foul and abusive language. Being abusive does not convey tone but changes the feeling someone has for you. I do not believe any human wants to be hated by anyone even if it is for a moment

  Bad language does convey emotion, yes indeed, if that's the only way a person knows how to express those feelings. You will no doubt agree that English is such a rich language that there will be plenty of different ways of expressing the same emotions and feeling without having to resort to that kind of repulsive language.

- Sure, there is always more than one way to say something, but it's important to be able to talk how you wish. The words you use are a part of your personality, especially in a place where your appearance to people is almost entirely in text. I, for one, like to throw big kid words into what I type, because I feel it sets me a apart from the rest of the extraordinarily boring Answerfag users. If it upsets you, then that's your problem, not mine.

- My personality is not beautiful, so it's fitting that I cuss a lot. I don't think people need to do it to feel wanted or different, but I do think that it is just a difference in the way people talk. There's nothing wrong with it, and if you can say things just as meaningful as any other person, if a little more dirty.

- Oh, but you're wrong in that one can curse even if one doesn't want to. My Irish friends insert "focking", yes "focking" with an "o" into every sentence and in between without even realising that they're doing it. But they swear to high heaven that it's not cursing!

- I find it is irritating me more and more that there are double standards in the flagging issues - some questions are rejected while others are not - a lot of inappropriate language is getting through! This is gettin more and more like Radio1!!
