Help answer this question below.

If everyone on the earth lost 20 lbs on a diet ( a total weight loss of 120 billion lbs) - would the mass of the earth, not counting the people increase by 120 billion lbs?

    Recognizing that we are part of the Earth, then there would be no change in the complete system with your scenario. However, when you exclude humans from the total mass of the Earth, then the mass lost from all of us would have to go somewhere. Since you scenario does not provide any means by which the mass lost by all of us could escape from the Earth, then that mass would still be hear. So the total mass of the Earth would increase by the same amount as that mass that is lost by us.
