Do any of you refuse to go to other countries because you are afraid of how you'll be treated as a tourist American?

I don't refuse, I am just too broke to go. I would hope that I would not be treated badly just because I am an American. I can see why foreigners mistreat anyone who comes to their country and acts rude, disrespectful, and as if they are entitled to special privileges.

I'm not American but I've seen quite a few American tourists in Europe and I have never seen them treated any differently to other foreigners. Also I've never seen any American tourists whose behaviour would tend to make them be treated badly.

I have never been mistaken for an American, let alone a US citizen.
I am sure that the vast majority of Americans do not harbour these feelings.
That some US citizens do so is apparent by your question.

that's a thought that has NEVER crossed my mind ... if i am worried about how a country's population would treat me, why would i give them my money??? FEAR has nothing to do with it ...

I'm pretty sure I would NEVER go to a "third world" country and possibly NEVER to France, as I understand the French HATE Americans!

- You should go adventure :) you will be able to share the stories with your loved ones long after, and you can experience french food! (which is like the only thing I find attractive fro mthe french to be honest..the scenery isn't as nice as the food even..) ^^D

Well, I wouldn't go to France, because I'm pretty sure the French hate everyone. However, if I was going to travel to another country, I would just put some Canadian flag pictures on my backpack or something.

- It is just a stereotype. Every time I have been to France the French have been incredibly kind! Though I don't doubt that many people have been treated badly by some.

Depends. I personally don't care about the country's inhabitants, I wouldn't want to go to a country only if I felt like I owed something to the country. For example, I'm italian, but was raised in japanese culture and I feel like I wouldn't want to go to the country until I am not a tourist american, not for the sake of the people's image of me, but because I don't want to be what I dislike. Its not about the people. Its about my own self-respect. I want to tell my self when I go to sleep that I am a respectable person who has worked hard to respect and honor the cultures of my life that I cherish.

- If that's all you want, then all it takes is what you already know. You know yourself you're educated in the cultures you love, how to present yourself in that country. The 'culture' does not care, the 'people' do. The people shouldn't matter, if they look down on you - so what? If they like you - fine! You are not a tourist American, and you should know that. It sounds like you want to wait until you transform into a different ethnicity (physically), and that's silly!

- Not quite. I am a person of an astute honor system. I know I am not a tourist american >because< I put hard work into the culture.
  Just saying "Oh I'm good, I'm no tourist" is exactly the tourist attitude. I do know I have studied and know the culture, but I don't want to go to japan and speak english. Not many people get this concept, but thats fine, as its not them buying my plane tickets ^^D
