It is celebrated in all Commonwealth nations. Not just Canada. It comes from a tradition of giving gifts to the poor and lower classes the day after Christmas. Now it seems like a day for huge after Christmas sales and returning gifts.

Once upon a time Boxing day (in the U.K.) was the one day a year wherein the masters and the servants (or in the army, officers and the enlisted) traded places.

In the 19th century it was a custom to give Christmas boxes to tradespeople on boxing day. Also it was a day when the masters(the rich) and the serfs(the poor) to change position for that one day.It is a national holiday in Commonwealth countries.(UK,Canada,Australia,etc.)

Apparently back in the day (supposedly) they day after x-mas the serfs/servants would walk around with an empty box and gather the left-over Christmas feast stuff and put it in the box for their families.

Nowadays, though, it's just an excuse to get wasted and watch football (soccer). All this according to the drunk English people I met this morning.
