  • I do that! Mainly cos ive got an old-ish car and i dont trust the handbrake
  • I've never used a handbrake at traffic lights. I've usually driven an automatic transmission ... but always just use the footbrake at lights. I don't, however, keep edging forward. I see people in manual transmission cars slowly edging backwards on inclines ... that makes me very nervous.
  • I've never heard of having to use a handbrake at a traffic light. But then, most drivers are idiots who shouldn't be anywhere near a car.
  • If your foot is on the clutch and one is on the brake, You will not edge forward's you will stall the engine. People edging forwards are the ones with automatic transmissions.
  • I only use the handbrake when I park. Not when I'm still traveling somewhere. Is that a state law where you are from?
  • I don't have my hand on the handbrake because I've never heard of doing that except for if you suck at getting your stickshift off hills. I slowly edge forward because otherwise I'm very slow off the mark. That tiny bit of forward momentum makes it less likely I'll kill the car. I don't do it the whole time though, just when the cross-traffic's light has gone yellow and I can expect green soon. The traffic lights in Germany are actually configured to take the guesswork out of doing that, since the vast majority of drivers there are in sticks.
