  • An avatar is all we are.
  • Every thing we do reflects back on ourselves. And people judge us based on what we do or don't do. That said, I try to balance that with who I really am. I'm not interested in doing something that might lose me a job or offend my friend, but I don't much care for trying to do something just so folks will think well of me.
  • I think even the classiest of people make the occasional tacky choice;)
  • an avatar show part of us, its not eveything. it will reflect part of our personlaity and preferences. maybe likes and dislikes. if other people really dont like our avatar then they probably wont get along too well with us because there will be a large difference in the way we think - good question btw
  • I do think the avatars tell us a little about the person behind it. Some do it to shock us but Ive talked to some of those people behind them and found them to be some of the best on this site. The avatars may be just a small bit of the person and if I find it offensive I try not to let it get into my thoughts as Im talking to them.
  • I don't go much by avatars. They can mislead. Some match their avatars with their "alter egos" and some try to represent their real selves. Some are just a picture they like that is unique. I am a "wolf howling in the wilderness" now because that is how I feel sometimes. I will shape shift again before winter, probably. Around November, I become a bear...(smile)
  • Your question brings to mind the avatars that AB user 'Zack-Phillis big brother' uses and keeps changing almost on a weekly basis. I had pointed out to him that his selection of avatars are somewhat weird and suggested he takes on a conventional avatar. He did choose a conventional animal picture avatar for a week, but has since changed over to his former choices. His AB participation is really 'Classy' but I have my own reservations about his avatars. When I checked on seeing your question, I find that he has come back to using a conventional avatar today.
  • i suppose, if they had it ironically, but personally i wouldnt choose anything even vaguely contraversial simply because this is a public site, and i would like to avoid offending anyone. I dont judge people on their avatars personally but i know some people do
  • I think that to make a judgement of a person based only on a small picture is folly in the highest...I've read your reply to the other ABer's who answered this question before me and while I don't care. The fact that you have now publicly humiliated this person(yes I know that you didn't actually say his name)disgusts me much more than any picture he could've chosen...But I guess my values and morals are just a little different than yours so you go on judging by what is on the outside and I'll keep judging people by their actions...your actions spoke volumes to me today
  • I recently looked up the dictionary definition for avatar and it said it is a computer alter ego. I believe that and think it indicates a lot more about the person than we think it does. I would have refused that persons request as well. Happy Tuesday Rosie.
  • it is difficult to judge someone from the avatar.
  • Well, I do think that an avatar can give insight as to what kind of person you are dealing with. For instance, if a person has a boring avatar, then that person is probably miserably uninteresting. That would be if a person has an avatar that is their own picture, although that could simply indicate a large ego, as it does with me whenever I use my own picture.
  • The avatar can say much about a person. A tacky avatar just shows bad judgment or a young person or someone who doesn't realize the whole world is watching and doesn't get that kind of humor.
  • Some avatars on this site are kind of sleazy, but I try to judge the person based on the quality of their answers, not on their user icons. I think people may be drawn to using controversial avatars because it's an anonymous forum and they are able to walk on the "wild side" a little bit with few repercussions.
  • The type of avatar selected will mean different things to all the other individual users out there. What offends one person could just make another laugh. And what one person considers classy another might consider poor taste or pretentious. It also depends what fields you are interested in, so if you are worried about how other people perceive you, try to choose something in line with your beliefs.
  • The avatar means nothing to me. The person behind it shines through no matter what. And here i thought i was safe in cyberspace. ;+
  • There definitely is something behind why we choose a certain avatar, but its going to be different reasons for everyone.
