Help answer this question below.
Could ask the same question as to why the USA did not build one to fly across the atlantic. Bigger population centres on either side of that pond.
The answer that killed the Boeing SST and the Concorde was the adverse publicity about the noise on takeoff which restricted the aerodromes cleared for operation to coastal strip.
The concord was smaller so ticket prices were well away from the normal fares at the time. A surcharge for the convenience of speed but the market for such convenience was very small.
QANTAS had lodged expressions of interest to buy and fly the concord on LHR - sydney -LHR route but noise restrictions over the indian sub continent and australian main land meant such crossings had to be flown at subsonic speed. Not an economically viable solution.

You're reading It takes nearly 15 hours to fly from L.A. to Sydney. You'd think the Aussies would be the ones to come up with an SST. All that over ocean flying - no one to bother with those sonic booms. Hey, Qantas - you listening?

Cowboy: Thanks. I should have known it was much easier said than done.
