Question

Help answer this question below.

When I bring my computer to a repair shop, why is it necessary for me to leave it for several days? Replacing a fan or board would take no more that 15 minutes. Why can't they do a "repairs while you wait"?

Because yours is NOT the only computer that needs repaired, and they have other things to do. Their world doesn't revolve around you.

If they don't have ANYTHING else to do, and can fix it right away, are you sure they're worth taking the computer to? That means that they DON'T have a lot of business.

Do you want it done right, or right now?

Probably, because it's easier to "juice" a patron--when the computer is in the shop for a couple of days! Not so easy, if the work's done in a matter of minutes--to say, "We needed a couple of extra HOURS to do the repair, and we had to order "special" parts!!!"

That's typical computer repair shop time. I was in a shop two weeks ago looking to get a new desktop computer. I'll finally get a price for it on Thursday this week. They always tell you to call back in a few days. If they ask for your contact phone number don't be expecting a call from them as they never call back.

I'll bet they were just sitting around waiting for you to show up so that they would have something to do.

It's the same thing with any repair garage. But what you got to remember is that just because it looks empty doesn't mean anything, if they say two days then there is no point arguing unless your willing to pay premiums, also parts and staff turning up are also factors.

I've contacts with quite a few companies in various fields and one lucrative one is computer service, in which I found a large company paying another large company to do the IT services for them and they were charging 150 bucks just to move a PC from one desk to another desk and the "rewiring" was an extra. There were over 500 PC's and a further 200 peripherals in the office and they paid an extra 50 bucks per machine for the next day service!

"What kind of turn around time do they have? Some computer repair shops will take two to three weeks to return your computer to you. Are you ready to be without your computer for that long? If not, shop around. There are computer repair shops that can get your computer back to you in as little as a few hours. Some of these faster companies can charge more but the speed is worth it if you are working on a big project that has to get done right away."

Personally I agree with you. It depends on the repair shop. Some have a mandatory three day turn around. Well, I can see that if it's a really busy place due to work already in progress or due to parts not being in stock; but not because they just don't feel up to it at that particular moment. To replace a simple case fan should take about 15 min. but a motherboard would probably be in the area of an hour. Learn how to do it yourself, that's what I do.
