Not a good idea because sunflowers are very fattening and they might want to fill up on just that and not other seeds. They need more balanced diet than just sunflower seeds. It's like a child just eating candy and not eating good food. And a fat overweight bird is more vulnerable to disease.

Personally, I wouldn't do that. First of all, you don't know whether a fresh sunflower is clean or not. Good quality domestic bird seed is usually cleaned before it is sold. Second, you don't want her eating the petals and the green parts, just as a precaution. Lastly, sunflower seeds are high in fat and should only be given as a treat. They should not be a major component of your bird's diet. You should primarily be feeding your bird pellets, a healthy seed mix (or millet, which is lower in fat) and fresh veggies. My tiels also like wild rice or whole wheat pasta.
