    Absolutely. Understanding the general idea and concept allows you to converse intelligently whereas rote memorization provides facts only as long as you can remember them--and then what do they really mean to you?

    With a complete understanding of the concept, you can usually derive the facts. For example, my husband developed a complete understanding of calculus and physics and to this day he can derive most mathematical formulas.

    Ideas,concepts,and facts can all be unreliable because it is possible that all of these things are variable. The changes in thinking and the advances of the world make it hard for these three things to remain constant and therefore true.
