One of the greatest offensive shortstops of all time. But he was at that point before. The fact that he is the Yankees all-time hit leader is just a footnote, besides for Yankees fans perhaps.
Jeter is one of the least offensive players ever -- that is, he's a great team player, living proof that one can be a first rate player and a nice guy too.
Also, he now has more hits than any other shortstop -- he broke Luis Aparicio's record -- and that's of interest to all baseball fans.
