    She is certainly over-rated.
    Sometimes she looks good, other times, Not so much.
    She is not ugly but is not beautiful either in my opinion.
    Pretty average.
    I think Hollywood just throws em out there and they become popular pretty or not.
    Kind of like fads.
    People just think it's the latest hottest thing and cling to it.
    Look at Julia Roberts. She is downright homely but is very popular.

    I agree with you, many celebs don't look that good til' they get covered in makeup. You probably wouldn't recognize many of them without the cosmetics.

    I have a theory about this.

    I once read an article about how Hollywood does car chases, car stunts, etc.

    One of the topics was bullet holes in cars.

    It turns out that real bullet holes in car sheet metal don't show up on camera worth a darn. So what the props/effects people do is drill out holes (about 1/2"), tape explosive squibs in the holes, then cover the holes with tape and paint over them.

    When the filming calls for bullets to make holes in the cars, they fire off the squibs.

    I think Angelina Jolie is an example of this hyper-reality. It's not that she's classically beautiful, but her combination of features (e.g. the super-puffed-up lips, etc.) is the kind of exaggeration that works well on camera.
