Sharia law has been corrupted by many societies.

Regardless of how accurately it is used it is simply not functional in a modern society. Nor is the law one would derive from a strict reading of the Old Testament. Sorry, extremist religious dudes, but it just won't cut it. Most religious people realize this.

I would like to mention a detail though. However offensive people and especially women may find various ancient religious laws, it is worth remembering that they almost certainly replaced WORSE treatment. Specifying how thick a rod one can use to beat one's wife is a step forward from not bothering to specify in the first place.

- I would like to amend my statement. As far as I know there is no mention in Sharia law of what you should or shouldn't use for wife-beating. I conflated that with the old 'rule of thumb' myth. There are limits to wife-beating - you are not to beat the face or various defined sensitive areas.

- Of COURSE no beating should be the norm. My point is that fifteen hundred years ago in Islamic (and probably most other) areas the norm was originally that any wife-beating was legal. No limits, go to town on her.

  Sharia law sought to literally lessen the impact of wife-beating. Should they have outlawed it entirely? Yep. Was that something that was ever going to happen in those cultures at that time? Nope.

  I'm not asking anyone to turn cartwheels over it here. It is obviously vile by today's standards. But in 600 AD it was better than nothing.

  Perhaps I should clarify that when I wrote, "There are limits to wife-beating - you are not to beat the face or various defined sensitive areas," I was referring to Sharia law.

Muslim feminist? Isn't that an oxymoron? I do know of one,Irshad Manji,an author,lesbian and lecturer.She is also on the jihadists hit list.She has to travel with bodyguards.Book:The trouble with Islam today.
