  • No. My house, my rules, my elbows. +5
  • No. I consider it comfortable.
  • It bugs me a bit. But not as much as when others chew with their mouths open.
  • no not if my guest are comfortable and having fun +5
  • Yes. It's bad table manners.
  • According to Emily Post's book on ettiquite (sp?) its okay to have elbows on the table because it shows you are engaging in the conversation, but however it is IMPROPER to have elbows on the table while holding an eating utensil or actually eating.
  • Nope, because everyone have their own way of eating things and habits. I do it sometimes.
  • not if its finger food like fried chicken
  • If there is enough room. I've noticed at fancy places, there is less room in the pristine setting. Then it is noticeable and bad manners. Eating pizza, you need elbows. +5
  • Not in the south. At a formal dinner, we place our elbows under the table and act like we know what we are doing.
  • Absolutely not, I never got that one... +++
  • It depends on the setting.. a very formal one I'd consider it bad manners. But at home or just about at any casual social gathering, I think it's just fine. Specially if you're going to be at the time a long time chatting. With some families or people(older people come to mind who rely more on traditional manners) it's probably safe to just avoid doing it unless you see other people doing it.
  • Nope. How can you eat corn on the cob without your elbows on the table? +5
  • G'day Zack, Thank you for your question. It depends on the circumstances. I wouldn't do it at a formal dinner. With friends and family, it is fine especially if the circumstances demanded it. Regards
  • I was taught it was rude but if other manners are ok, no eating with mouth open etc. I dont notice it. It depends what you are eating. It seems less of a problem in informal settings or eating with fingers. At a formal meal I would keep mine off.
  • depends on what you are eating and who you are sharing your meal time with..................... growing up elbows never were allowed on the table. BUT..........today...40 yrs later eating with a friend I feel very comfortable with- I catch myself when grubbing down a bunch of bar BQ beef ribs, fresh buttered corn on the cob, n water mellon 1/4's with my elbows on the table.......... slighty. i guess i just like hearing my mom's voice in my head scolding me. ssssssssssssoooooooooooooooooo no it's not polite per say (sp) but my friend too likes to enjoy a meal not all caught up on lame things like elbows touching the surface of the dinning table. no shirt @ the table is gross though and when my boys were growing up-no hats worn while @ the dinner table either. I guess all parents have to have some "lame table manner rules". the no shirt one is one I really stick to even today . ha ha unless of course-it's me. usually I'm dining solo at those "rare" times!
  • Yes, it is rude but I do it anyway, unless I am out with my Irish in any establishment other than a fast-food place.
  • No I don't, but I know it isn't good table manners, and I won't do it. If others do, well, it's not going to ruin my meal!! =)
  • I never had my elbows on the table, until I ended up living in Belgium. Its the way they do it over there. Now, I'm having to remind myself to put my hand in my lap...because it's considered rude in America.
  • Depends on who you're with and where you're at. My viewpoint is if you're at home or with someone you know very well, as long as no one minds, it's ok as long as you keep your elbows to yourself and aren't taking up the whole table. Otherwise, it might be wise to at least consider keeping them off.
  • Sometimes yes.
  • no. i use to get in trouble for it back home. now i find it pretty uncomfortable unless your really tall. honestly i don't see why it's rude at all. i mean why are people so offended by elbows
  • Donkey, Donkey in the stable. Get your elbows off the table. I was raised with this said to me as my elbows were thumped by my mom or dad. No elbows allowed while eating with utensils. Finger foods were another story.
  • In the strictest terms, yes it is. However, it depends upon if I am alone and enjoying a good book while I eat, or in the good company of friends or family. Also dependent upon the QUALITY of the restaurant I'm in.
  • We were taught that its one of the set of rules in table manners not to rest your elbows on the table cause with it on the table you are either 'flying' or your knife and fork is up in the air and if there's food on the fork chances are good for the food to go 'flying' some time or another. No, not me or my kids are earing with the elbows on the table...
  • In any situation where manners count, yes. A couple friends having beer and pizza - no. +5
  • Yes it is considered rude, but why it is considered rude i really dont get, its better then people making a noise when they eat,
  • No Im not that hung up on table manners XD As long as everyones comfortable and enjoying themselves who cares?
  • I think that it is very rude.
  • Yes, if the setting is somewhat formal. Otherwise, grab a slab of ribs and have it at.
